Sometimes, you may be in a need to reboot your server in a single user mode. Below are the exact steps to reboot server in a single user mode:

There are five different runlevels available in Linux. You can check the runlevels in /etc/inittab file. Level 1 is used for start server in a single user mode. You can directly run init 1  command from SSH to reboot in a single user mode. There are also other options available listed below:

1. You can edit /etc/inittab file and set value init:1:initdefault:, it will by default run your system in single user mode,

2.

* Reboot the server and wait for the GRUB screen to come.
* When GRUB screen appears then press one of the arrow keys.
* In default option press ‘e’ to enter in edit mode
* Select the line referring to the Kernel and press ‘e’ key again.
* At the end of the line add the word ’single’ (leave one space before it)
* Press Escape key to exit edit mode and then ‘b’ to boot into single user mode.

Thanks!

Janak.
